About KLASS

When the first case of HIV was diagnosed in Malaysia in 1986, doctors were initially able to monitor the progress of their patients’ health. As the number of cases grew over the years, doctors realized that due to time constraints, they were increasingly unable to spend a sufficient amount of time counseling each person.

Infectious Disease Physician of Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Dr Christopher Lee envisioned a group where volunteers, both HIV positive and HIV negative alike, would provide the much needed moral and emotional support. Together with dedicated volunteers and support from the community, Kuala Lumpur AIDS Support Services Society was formed and officially registered with the Registrar of Society (ROS) in Year 2001, and subsequently joined Malaysian AIDS Council as one of its partner organization.

KLASS was initially set up to cater to the needs of the Chinese and Tamil speaking communities, where there was a huge gap in the area of information, counseling and support for niche group of PLHIV. Language barrier was an issue to access of HIV information for these communities in treatment center. Today, KLASS  has grown to address the needs of people of all races and religions. At regular meetings initially held once a month, information such as treatment, nutrition, safer sex, as well as other relevant topics are provided. For the past 10 years, our activities have received continuous support from Ministry of Health Malaysia, private companies and community.

KLASS activities are planned in line with the objectives of the organization as such:

  • To complement existing treatment services provided by hospital-based care by giving support services
  • To support & facilitate temporary shelter for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV)
  • To provide information & counseling on HIV/AIDS and related issues to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS

To complement existing treatment services provided by hospital-based care by giving support service

KLASS runs Hospital Peer Support Programme (HPSP) at the Hospital Sungai Buloh, Hospital Kajang  and Hospital Seremban. Through HPSP, peer counseling is provided for HIV positive patients in the main HIV treatment centers in Klang Valley and assist newly diagnosed patients to be familiarized with the hospital set up and treatment procedures.

To provide information & counseling on HIV/AIDS and related issues to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS

Support groups continue to be the main activity in KLASS to provide a safe space for those infected and affected to share their common issues and gain friendship to support each other. KLASS also extended the aim to provide HIV awareness to larger community by organizing World AIDS Day Campaign in the community and schools.  KLASS Helpline at +603 4045 3686 provides confidential, informative counseling and referrals to related agencies and NGOs throughout Malaysia. The Helpline is handled by trained volunteers/KLASS officer and is available on Wednesday to Saturday from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. KLASS can also be contacted at +603 4045 6681 or fax +603 4045 2861.

To support & facilitate temporary shelter for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV)

KLASS also facilitates temporary shelter and care for PLHIVs. The two shelter homes located in Kuala Lumpur, one for men and the other for women and children, are run by The Faith Helping Centre. Focused on rehabilitation of the residents, the intention of the home is to eventually reunite the residents and their family and provide them with survival skills in preparation for reintegration into society in general.
