17. How to prevent HIV infection through sexual contact?

The best way to prevent you from being infected with HIV through sexual contact is by practicing abstinence from sex.

If at any time abstinence from sex cannot be practiced, then the next best way to reduce the risk of HIV infection through sexual contact is by being faithful to one partner only. Having a monogamous relationship with a person who is known to be HIV-negative will not only prevent yourself or your partner from getting infected with the virus but also prevent the spread of the virus.

If you are sexually active, protect yourself from HIV infection by practicing safer sex. Whenever you have sex, use a condom or "dental dam" (a square of latex recommended for use during oral-genital and oral-anal sex).

Self masturbation, sexual fantasizing, sensual massage and other forms of non-penetrative sex are other ways of fulfilling one’s sexual urges without putting yourself or your partner at risk of HIV infection.
